San Diego Farms & the Fires
The wind and wildfires that raced through San Diego County in October caused more than $42.6 million in crop damage alone, according to the latest estimates from the county agricultural commissioner's office. This figure, however, does not include losses to irrigation systems, supplies, farm equipment or farm structures destroyed or damaged during the wildfires and windstorms that drove the disaster, according to the California Farm Bureau Federation. In S.D. County nearly 8,700 acres of agricultural land were damaged in the fire, including almost 6,200 acres of rangeland.
S.D. County Farm Bureau Exec. Director Eric Larson said that, beyond the crop losses, there was extensive damage to farm infrastructure and homes not reflected in agricultural damage reports. “I've seen farms where people lost 100 percent of everything they had. For them it's catastrophic.”
Below is an unofficial and partial listing of some of our farmers and producers that sustained damages due to the wildfires:
* Be Wise Ranch, a certified organic farm that has been growing organic produce since 1977, suffered both the loss of Bill & Marsanne Brammer's home and parts of the farm. All of the donations received are going towards the rebuilding of the farm and office. They've resumed normal CSA deliveries and will supplement some items until back to 100% production capabilities. See www.bewiseranch.com for updates, how you can help, volunteer and wish lists.
* San Pasqual Academy (SPA) Farm lost buildings for staff and farm interns, plus had wind/heat fire damage. 300 Avocado trees and 2 small orange groves burned. SPA is the first public residential high school for foster children in the nation.
Slow Food San Diego (SFSD) continues to raise funds for the SPA and Fire/Farm aid at each of their events. You can help by attending the SFSD holiday dinner at Molly's on Dec. 11 th . See www.slowfoodsandiego.org for details. SFSD is developing a long-term collaboration between farmers, community and consumer groups to promote Local, Fresh and Seasonal produce and market venues for farmers.
* Tierra Miguel: evacuated, able to resume most of their CSA deliveries.
* Budwood Farms, an organic farm in Fallbrook: lost their house, greenhouses and an avocado grove.
* Elliott Protea Farm in Ramona: their house and crop completely burned to the ground.
* Pinery Christmas Trees, Norm Osborne Trees, and pumpkin patch burned completely.
* Stehly Orchards had a lot of damage and loss of trees.
“Buy Local” has even more importance now. You're sending your dollars directly back to help the rebuilding of your local farms. For additional ways to help please see the farms' websites, and future TLC News/Foodbites. |

The book “You Can Heal Your Life” is reported to have lead many people to their right path of loving themselves and letting go of beliefs that no longer served them. “When we love ourselves, we feel better physically, we are better physically and we are better able to love others. I think it's really important to revisit this book if it's been a while,” encourages Rev. Claudia, “Dust it off, grab a friend, and come to class!”
