Senate Disappoints, but Local Project Inspires

The Senate passed it's version of the Energy Bill in late June, but it did not take make any major commitment similar to some governments. Defeated was an amendment to require that the nation's utilities produce 15% of their electricity from wind and other renewable energy sources. Most of Europe has such legislation in place. But it's not all decided yet and they do pay attention when enough people complain and write them.

FoodBites: A Slice of Freedom
Healthy Living Recipes & News to Use

" ...the way we eat represents our most profound engagement with the natural world." - Michael Pollan, The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals

After I savored the most flavorful, juicy, literally melt in your mouth, organic, locally grown peach at the Farmer's Market I discussed a question with Barry Logan, farmer and owner of La Milpa Organica Farm, regarding freedom and food. With July 4th and Independence Day it brought to mind this topic as well as our interconnectedness to all the living world. Barry expressed "When I think of freedom, I think of the Jeffersonian notion as freedom which has responsibility attached to it....Looking at this in food production systems, freedom is important because the way in which we eat determines how much freedom we have. In the supermarkets you have generic food, with no idea of where it comes from. What freedom do you really have a bout what you're eating? It looks differentiated but it's all the same glop,...corn-based fructose syrup. Even produce from industrial agriculture is deficient in nutrients; old food from far away. Whereas at a farmer's market all the food is locally produced, you come and look at all the variety, all fresh. You have so much freedom of choice! You're exercising your responsibility as a consumer by coming to farmer's markets and supporting local agriculture. You're being responsible to insure that your food source is secure. Choose real food for real people."

Living in the Flow

The Tao and water are synonymous according to the teachings of Lao-tzu. You are water; water is you. Think about the first nine months of your life after conception: You lived in, and were nourished by, amniotic fluid, which is truly unconditional love flowing into you . . . flowing as you. You are now 75 percent water (and you r brain is 85 percent), and the rest is simply muscled water.

Transformational Talk
Dependant on Alcohol to
De-Stress?

Can't imagine being happy without that evening drink? If your day's end relaxing always involves alcohol, you may be caught in an addiction process. While the first four ounces of wine or beer can have a medicinal effect, anything more burdens your liver and actually increases stress. Furthermore, it's hard to stop drinking once you've started, because alcohol itself weakens your will. Alcohol dependence also decreases your patience for the time it takes to relax naturally. Alcohol's effects are almost nstantaneous. Natural methods take a bit longer.

An Interview with Mariel Hemingway

Mariel Hemingway is the granddaughter of author Ernest Hemingway. She gained success early, at age thirteen, for her part in the film Lipstick . Four years later she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Woody Allen's film Manhattan .

Her childhood, however, was not a happy one. Members of her family fought the challenge of living up to the legacy of Ernest Hemingway, the expectations of others, drug abuse and themselves. Early on she became her mother's caretaker. Seeing the chaos and how it affected her family taught her early to look to herself for ways of coping with the world and maintaining her sanity.

Married since she was 23, Mariel now has two teenage daughters, is a yoga instructor and continues to be an actress and model.

The coping tools she has learned and developed through her life are shared in Healthy Living from the Inside Out (HarperSanFrancisco, 2007). There she spells out her 30-Day Quickstart Program for renewing our energy, tuning into ourselves and living an active life while remaining in balance. She will be speaking at Seaside Center in Encinitas July 20. See end of article for more.

As you will see in this conversation with her, she is clear and focused, while fun and delightful to speak with.
