FOOD, Inc.: Well-Done Documentary Now Showing

.FOOD, Inc. is the new documentary about our food, what's in it, the people and corporations who supply most of it and those giving us other options. You could say it's about how we're stuffed and also why we're stuffed. It's very well done.

The publicity describes it like this: “Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, the USDA and FDA.”

Is it Possible to Meditate in a Moment?

The following is excerpted from One-Moment Meditation: Stillness for People on the Go
(Winter Road, May 2009) by Martin Boroson

Many people do see mediation as an endurance test: the longer they can sit still, being peaceful, the more spiritual they are. Many people also believe that meditation must be practiced in a serene and beautiful retreat—far removed from everyday life. They have these beliefs, no doubt, because so much of our spiritual heritage has been handed down by monks, nuns, hermits, and prophets—people who renounced ordinary life to spend years and years in silent contemplation.

But times are changing, and our understanding of meditation is, too. Scientific research is confirming that the benefits of meditation are not just esoteric or—“spiritual,” but quite practical, too. Laboratory experiments and psychological studies have shown that meditation can improve our mood, decrease anxiety, alleviate depression, lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system, and promote optimism and resilience.

Busting Green Myths

The following excerpt is taken from the book GREEN MADE EASY: The Everyday Guide for Transitioning to a Green Lifestyle by Chris Prelitz . It is published by Hay House (April 2009) and is available at all bookstores or online at: www.hayhouse.com.

Over the years, I've heard many individuals complain that going green is too expensive or that recycling doesn't help. And I've heard many other green myths that just aren't true. So, here are ten green myths debunked to clear up any misconceptions you may have about all this green stuff right up front.

Myth #1: Going Green Will Be Expensive

Busted . This is true for some things but totally false for others. Eating better with organic produce might cost more. Using green alternatives, such as coconut oil for shaving cream, usually costs less than store-bought products. Other green steps might require more cash up front, but they'll save you money for years to come. Installing a water filter at home and using a refillable water bottle can save you thousands of dollars over buying bottled water.

“It’s the right of every American to
have Health Care.” — Greg Knoll

For the past thirty-five years, as Executive Director and Chief Counsel of the Legal Aid Society of San Diego, attorney Gregory E. Knoll has had a close-up view of social services—and the lack of them—in San Diego County. Since before the Clinton efforts to reform health care in the early 1990s, he has been deeply involved in the issue. He also heads Legal Aid's Consumer Center for Health Education and Advocacy, which opened in May of 1999 as a result of his efforts in establishing the Health Consumer Alliance, a collaboration between nine California legal services programs, the Western Center on Law & Poverty and the National Health Law program. A major advocate for universal health care, he is a man with a clear eye on the health care debate as it is unfolding in Washington. He spoke with The Light Connection 's David S. Cohen on what we can and should expect as the process continues.

Dr. Carmela Corallo Jackson Passes June 16

I lost a good friend this past month—the whole community lost one of its special members. Carmela Corallo Jackson, passed June 16, and truly, I've never met anyone quite like her.

She was incredibly talented and brilliant. She had a B.A. Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California , Berkeley , as well as a Ph.D. in Psychology.  She was a psychic counselor, shaman, and healer.

Carmela was the Director of the Infinite Winds Center and a frequent guest on television and radio. Her accomplishments and credentials are too numerous to mention. To know those details I suggest you go to her website at: www.carmelajackson.com/about_us

For me she always embodied how many of us, I think, would like to be—especially when it came to patience.
