Auracle
By Lesiem; Intentcity Records; 2004; $16.98; 714/630-0202;

Auracle breaks new ground by digging up the (very) old ground of Gregorian chants and combining them with inspired vocals and worldbeat influences.
This album awakens sleeping myths and slumbering fables while embracing the wonders of the world. |

We enjoyed the universal musical style, the arty combination of high, sweet vocals against the backdrop of male chanting.
This is the third album from the mystic-pop group known as Lesiem. Their previous records made the Billboard charts.

People of Peace
By R. Carlos Nakai Quartet; Canyon Records; 2004; $xx.xx; 800/
268-1141; www.canyonrecords.com
People of Peace is wonderfully multicultural, evocative, funky, thoughtful, playful—truly an adventure in musical exploration. It starts out soft, then lifts you up and jazzes you. I thought for a moment I was in China! And nature is truly alive here, wind blowing up a storm.

This album is a real adventure in global native groove. There's plenty of space for each artist to showcase their own musical style. Original compositions blend Nakai's earthy and ethereal Native American flute, Mary Redhouse's eco-spiritual vocalizations, multi-instrumentalist AmoChip Dabney's inspired improvisations, and percussionist Will Clipman's irresistible rhythms. The result is artistic, fun, witty. Innovative! There's a certain je m'en fous attitude here as the group pushes the envelope of world beat and of music itself.
I wish I'd been there when they were recording it, because they clearly had a blast. And I feel joyous laughter rising in me every time I play it.

This great scripture is the ancient Indian story of the conversation between Arjuna and Krishna, during which Krishna enlightens the young warrior on the nature of true spiritual commitment. Many consider it the finest spiritual scripture in all of human history.
Kumuda (Sharon Janis) is the author of Spirituality for Dummies, Secrets of Spiritual Happiness, and Never to Return , and has been chanting and studying Sanskrit scriptures for decades.
