How Elephants Saved the Lives of 42 Tsunami Victims
From the chaos of the Tsunami disaster comes an incredible tale from Jim France of the Pavilion Hotel Group in Bangkok:
At a resort on Phuket, one of the most popular attractions was the elephant ride. As many as eight people would sit atop one elephant, who would escort the tourists into the surrounding forest, down to the beach, to lunch at a fresh water lagoon, and then back to the hotel. A team of nine elephants was kept chained to in-ground posts, not because they were dangerous, but because it made tourist mothers feel safer when their children fed the huge animals. |
|
Twenty minutes before the first wave hit, the elephants became extremely agitated and unruly. Four had just returned from a tour and their handlers had not yet chained them. Suddenly the four helped their five peers tear free from their chains. Then they all climbed a hill and began to bellow; many people followed them up the hill. Then the waves began to crash. After the tsunami subsided, the elephants charged down from the hill and began to pick up children with their trunks and ran them back up the hill to safety. When all the children were taken care of, they started helping the adults.
The elephants rescued 42 people. Then returned to the beach and carried up four dead bodies, including one of a child. Not until the task was done would they allow their handlers to mount them. Then, with handlers atop, they began moving wreckage.

Kung Food Restaurant Reopens
To the delight of San Diegans, one of the town's most eclectic restaurants reopened at its original location adjacent to Balboa Park. For more than 20 years, Kung Food received praise from local and national food critics and lines of devoted customers who waited for an open table at this award-winning eatery.
Kung Food owed its tremendous popularity to its unique restaurant concept. The heart of Kung Food was its exotic world cuisine prepared to the highest standards of excellence. Rich organic flavors and intoxicating aromas combined to delight the senses, while sensual music and warm candlelight provided a refuge from the outside world.
To the lament of many San Diegans, Kung Food became extinct after its founders, Frank and Clarissa Russo, retired in 1990. Fortunately their original recipes survived and a team, led by restaurateur Mitch Wallis, has now reopened the landmark restaurant in its original location.
According to Wallis, “We are thrilled and fortunate to bring Kung Food back to life. We see people coming with big grins on their faces, and they ask, ‘Do you still have this-or-that on the menu?' The miso-ginger dressing, the lasagna, the cornbread - there were so many signature dishes. We have many of them.”
Kung Food is located at 2949 5th Avenue at the corner of Quince next to Extraordinary Desserts. The restaurant opens weekdays at 11am and weekends at 10am. Closing time is 11pm on Friday and Saturday and 9pm on all other nights. Phone (619) 298-7302.
