Peace & Non-Violence in Action Around the World
Last Fall Light Connection featured a local grassroots group
that is advocating with members of Congress to pass the ground-breaking “Department of Peace and Non-Violence” (“DOPN”) Bill (H.R 3760 and S.1756). The Bill is currently in committee in both Houses of Congress and, when passed, will establish a Secretary of Peace and Non-Violence as part of the federal Cabinet, with jurisdiction to offer non-violent solutions to conflicts occurring both in international locations as well as here at home in our own neighborhoods.

The Heart
It Thinks, Feels, Directs—
It Speaks
An interview with Director Erminia “Mimi” Guarneri, M.D. by Steve Hays, edited by David Cohen |
|
Mimi Guarneri is a cardiologist and the medical director of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, which is blending scientifically proven alternative practices with the best of conventional medicine. Her new book, The Heart Speaks, was not an easy read for me. It's not a complicated or technical book, but it does make you look at your life, your relationships and your history. Dr. Guarneri's approach has expanded from treating the physical heart to recognizing the mental, emotional and spiritual heart. Her book reflects that approach. It made me think about my health habits and choices. It helped me realize how important my feelings are to my health. It's helped me reprioritize what's important and look at my life differently. It's really helped me redefine health.
Dr. Guarneri's book is the story of her education and journey, from losing her mother when still a child to her evolution and growth as a doctor—from caring to learning not to care too much, back to caring and evolving to a healer.
One the things that I took from the book that I really appreciate and try to remember when I am with people is the way she is with her patients. With as few preconceptions as possible, she listens to what they have to say. If you listen, she says, the patient will tell you the diagnosis. Sooner or later, the heart speaks and tells you what's wrong. She tells us to listen, and speak, sooner. What follows is a conversation

Michael Lerner & the Spiritual Progressives
A Light Connection Interview
Rabbi Michael Lerner is coming to San Diego on April 18 as part of a nationwide tour related to his latest work, The Left Hand of God: Taking Back The Country from The Religious Right. In it, he champions a fundamentally new approach to the prospect of taking spiritual needs seriously in our economic and political worlds and in our personal lives. He does not believe in pussy-footing into the future as many prospective candidates for the Democratic nomination in 2008 seem to be doing—offering a number of mild reforms to our present political system but shying away from fundamental change.

New Releases Abound
Spiritual Cinema Takes Off!
by Stephen McCrory
Spiritual Cinema has been a secret to those in the know for many years and not a topic explored by mainstream Hollywood until recently. It has only been with the recent unexpected success of What the Bleep that Hollywood has begun to entertain whether or not successful films could be based on enlightenment, quantum physics, metaphysics or some blend of the three.

Giving from the Heart
The Heart of Nonviolent Communication
by Marshall B. Rosenberg, Ph.D.
Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D, a former clinical psychologist, left his practice and hit the road in the early 1960s to teach the world the peacemaking communication skills that he taught his clients. In 1984 he founded the non-profit Center for Nonviolent Communication which organizes workshops across the United States and Europe . He will be in San Diego in April. (More at end.)
“What I want in my life is compassion, a flow between myself and others based on a mutual giving from the heart.”
Believing that it is our nature to enjoy giving and receiving in a compassionate manner, I have been pre-occupied most of my life with two questions. What happens to disconnect us from our compassionate nature, leading us to behave violently and exploitatively? And conversely, what allows some people to stay connected to their compassionate nature under even the most trying circumstances?
