Diesel Effecting San Diego

Did you notice last month in the San Diego Union (March 23) that there was an article on the heavy polluting diesel trucks that pass through here from Mexico, often spewing toxins for hours as they wait to get across the border? In San Diego the EPA is starting a pilot program that will install filters on Mexican trucks. Pollutants will be reduced 25%, at the cost of $3500. per truck. Estimates are that traffic will increase by 12,000-17,000 trucks a day later in the year.

The filters or catalysts will reduce several of the pollutants that diesel emit. It's a step in the right direction.

While this is currently a small pilot program, there are other less costly avenues to explore.

If we multiply $3500 by 12,000 that's $42 million for a reduction or 25% at best. It's not even keeping up considering the increased traffic.

As we mentioned last month, biodiesel fuel is available now as a healthier alternative than regular diesel. We don't have the space to compare all of the seven pollutants we have figure for, but the benefits of using 100% biodiesel (B-100) is equal to or much greater than the catalysts being studied for all but one pollutant.

The catalysts reduce particulate matter for instance, 25%. B-100 reduces it 47%. Look at the fuel facts on the biodiesel.org site for more comparisons.

In fact, available right now is B-20 (20% biodiesel), which reduces particulate matter 12%, without a $3500 catalyst. I know because I buy it myself at the Regional Transportation Center at Pearson Ford (I-15 and El Cajon Blvd.) I use the Bio-Willie we wrote about last issue.

The EPA is looking at the feasibility of requiring these catalysts all along the border. Normally, however, catalysts burn the fuel more efficiently, but most of the pollution comes from the dirty diesel fuel. That will change later in the year when the “clean diesel” used in Europe will be required to be used here. That reduces the particulate pollutants from 200 ppm to less than 5 ppm.

Don't we want to explore our fuel options?

Sunrise Powerlink

The Sunrise Powerlink (SPL) Project by SDG&E has seen much controversy in a few short months. San Diego Gas and Electric Website states the Sunrise Powerlink is a new “energy superhighway” between San Diego and the Imperial Valley that will add another vital link to the state's energy grid and ensure a safe and reliable supply of energy for the region. It will improve energy reliability, provide access to clean, renewable energy, reduced energy costs and increase energy access.

Their position has been challenged, especially the project route and the damage it might cause to the environment and the people in the communities the powerlines reach.

“The local chapter of the Sierra Club recently decided to oppose the Sunrise Powerlink, saying that after a lengthy review it decided the benefit derived from new power lines is outweighed by the ‘considerable environmental damage' that would result,“said Sierra Club spokeswoman Kelly Fuller.

David Simon Speaks on his new book in LA and SD in early May

In his new book, The Ten Commitments: Translating Good Intentions into Great Choices , David Simon, MD., neurologist and cofounder of The Chopra Center, has created a ten-step primer for practical change. Public talks will be held by Dr. Simon on Tuesday, May 2, 7:30pm at Bodhi Tree Bookstore, 8585 Melrose Avenue, West Hollywood, 310/659-1733 and Wednesday, May 3, 7:30pm at Barnes & Noble, 10775 Westview Parkway, Mira Mesa, 858/684-3166.

Global Health Education Event — 60 Nations, 50 US States

World Tai Chi & Qigong Day — One World…One Breath

On April 29, an unprecedented, and spectacularly visual, global health and healing educational event will span the globe in 60 nations, and all 50 US states and will continue on the last Saturday of April each year.

Beginning in the earliest time zones of New Zealand , this event has been officially recognized by the United Nations World Health Organization, governors, senates, and mayors of many nations worldwide.

The event is a spiritually inspiring coming together of people around the globe to celebrate personal and global health and healing; however, it is also a serious health education event .

In spite of the fact that less than one-half of one-percent of the NIH annual budget is spent researching “complimentary health” technologies, there is substantial mounting research finding that the ancient health systems of Tai Chi and Qigong (Chi Kung) may offer profound benefits for many ailments and chronic diseases.

In one study, for example, it was found that Tai Chi doubled practitioners resistance to viral infection. This should have spurred a massive influx of research dollars to learn more — but it hasn't. One of the goals of World Tai Chi and Qigong Day is to stimulate an international discussion of these ancient Chinese health technologies, and what they portend for the future of our sagging healthcare systems.

Tai Chi and Qigong are also being used increasingly in education, penal and drug rehabilitation, and corporate wellness. US Corporations lose over $300 billion annually to unmanaged stress, about $7,500 per employee per year. Tai Chi not only is a powerful stress reducer, but also burns substantial calories and provides roughly the same cardiovascular benefit as moderate- impact aerobics.

See a Celestine Prophesy Preview

The special pre-release of the long awaited feature film, The Celestine Prophecy, will be previewed by various organizations and churches from March 31 to April 14. The film will be released to theaters in mid-May.

The film is based on James Redfield's world wide bestselling novel, The Celestine Prophecy. In 1995 and 1996, The Celestine Prophecy was the bestselling American book in the world. It stayed on the New York Times bestseller's list for over three years, was translated into more than 40 languages, and ultimately influenced the world with some 12 million copies in print. A 2000 New York Times Reader's Poll named The Celestine Prophecy as the #1 all-time bestseller in religion, spirituality, and philosophy.

The Celestine Prophecy Movie is an adventure film chronicling the discovery of ancient scrolls in the rain forests of Peru. The prophecy and its nine key insights predict a worldwide awakening, arising within all religious traditions, that moves humanity toward a deeper experience of spirituality.

The film features an international ensemble cast including Matthew Settle, Thomas Kretschmann, Sarah Wayne Callies, Annabeth Gish, Hector Elizondo, Joaquim de Almeida and Jurgen Prochnow.

“Allowing groups to host special sneak previews is a key part of our mission to get the word out about this movie and its message,” states author/filmmaker James Redfield. “Because this was a book that so many people shared with their friends and family, passing it literally around the world, we wanted to create a community-feeling with the sneak previews where people can share the movie experience.”

For a complete list see www. thecelestineprophecymovie.com.

In this issue is a partial list of locations showing the preview in Southern California. Times were not available on the website, though more details are available for many of the events in the calendar section this issue.
