Kirtan Behind Bars

Hundreds of women are singing, crying and dancing. Others sit mesmerized at the band before them. The lead singer yells out, “Are you ready to go deep?” to a sea of “Yes!” and claps of approval, this petite woman then says, “Then everyone needs to get up!” As the crowd rises, a few people on the periphery begin to circle. This might be the most amazing concert you'll ever experience, but you can't buy a ticket to this particular show.

In My Own Words
His Holiness the Dalai Lama On Happiness

The following excerpt is taken from the new book, In My Own Words: An Introduction to My Teachings and Philosophy by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, edited by Rajiv Mehrotra. It is published by Hay House (September 2008) and available at all bookstore or online at www.amazon.com.

One great question underlies our experience, whether we think about it consciously or not: What is tHis Holiness the Dalai Lama On Happinesshe purpose of life? I have considered this question and would like to share my thoughts in the hopes that they may be of direct, practical benefit to those who read them.

FoodBites
Food for Thought on the Food Crisis; News to Use

As the global food crisis, labeled a hunger “tsunami” by the media, continues to escalate, individually voting with our forks, or dollars and sense, may not be enough to slow down this wipeout.

Raj Patel is a writer, activist and academic, and the author of the highly acclaimed Stuffed and Starved. His motivating book, translated into many languages, asks why it is that around the world a billion people are overweight while nearly a billion are starving, and about the millions of people who are fighting back. He will also be a featured speaker at Slow Food Nation (see pg. 14 for more details). Watch future FoodBites for more from Patel and others on the world food crisis.

Alice Waters and a new book from Slow Food Nation

Come to the Table is an inviting introduction to the Slow Food movement that helps the reader connect with the people who keep the farm-to-table tradition alive. Slow Food Nation board President Katrina Heron, Executive Director Anya Fernald and journalists Carol Ness and Nathaniel Johnson, tell the story of twelve separate meals, each hosted by an artisan or farmer family in the California countryside, where the majority of America's fresh foods are produced. Profiles include some of the farmers who will be featured at the Marketplace at Slow Food Nation '08 this August. The book will be published in September.

Alice Waters, chef, author, and proprietor of the world famous Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley, CA, is a pioneer of a culinary philosophy based on using only the freshest organic products, served only in season. Waters is V.P. of Slow Food International and the author of eight books. Her commitment to education led to the creation of The Edible Schoolyard in 1996, a one-acre garden and an adjacent kitchen classroom at Berkeley's Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School. The Edible Schoolyard is a model public education program that gives 1,000 students the knowledge and values they need to build a humane and sustainable future by actively involving them in all aspects of the food cycle.

Freeze on Solar Proposals Melts and Al Gore Throws Down the Gauntlet

We note with interest the news earlier this month that the Bureau of Land Management, which in late June had announced a two-year freeze on all new applications for solar plants on federal lands pending the completion of environmental impact studies to determine their effect on habitat and wildlife, reversed its decision and is again accepting applications.

Grace Light: A Global Evolutionary Plan

Grace Light is God's evolutionary plan for the human race. It is a new phenomenon that the human race has never seen before. It is a next step to live a life without pain and suffering. Up until now humanity as a whole has accepted disease, ache, pain, death, disappointment, depression, etc. as part of the inevitable experiences that one cannot but go through. It is true that we are fighting against them through modern medical science and other technologies. But we have far from getting even near to a permanent solution.

Onebody:
A Conversation with Neale Donald Walsch

Dennis Weaver, actor, humanitarian, and pioneer environmentalist, succumbed to complications from cancer February 24 at his home in Ridgway, Colorado. He would have been 82 on June 4th and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gerry, and their sons and grandchildren. Born in Joplin, Missouri, Dennis starred in 9 television series, including Gunsmoke , for which he won an Emmy in 1959 for his portrayal of “Chester,” as well as Gentle Ben and McCloud . He also played leading roles in 40 motion pictures, including Orson Welles' 1958 Touch of Evil and the 1971 Spielberg TV classic Duel .

But it was as a humanitarian and ultimately an environmentalist that he made what was perhaps his signal contributions. In 1982, Dennis, his wife Gerry and friends founded L.I.F.E (Love Is Feeding Everyone), which fed 180,000 people in Los Angeles each week. In 1986 he received the Presidential End Hunger Award .
