Be the Change
Be the Change You Want to See in the World is a daybook for helping us keep our hearts and minds open to all that lives.
For every day of the year the author, Julie Fisher-McGarry, offers “personal anecdotes, inspiring quotations, verses of poetry, simple vegetarian recipes, women's health tips, environmental facts, and green thoughts—each just a small thing that you can do to have a positive impact of the world.”
Here are a few excerpts from her book.
Dec. 13—Great Friends are the Best Gifts
The ornaments of a house are the guests that frequent it.
—Anonymous
Dec. 24 - Peace and Goodwill to All
When the relatives start arriving, take a deep breath, give sincere hugs and smiles, and see the best in everyone. Ban gossip and bad mouthing right from the start; every one of us has faults, let's not air them. Either change the subject, give the person a task to do, or simply tell them, plainly and directly, that this is the season of goodwill.
December 25 - Have a Gentle Heart
You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.
—Indira Gandhi
Most of us have so much “stuff” these days so why not make this the season that your family gives to those less fortunate.
Ask your child to give one of their gifts to a less-fortunate child.
If you host a party ask friends to bring a gift suitable to donate to a children's charity, nursing home, or an animal shelter, instead of a hostess gift or bottle of wine.
Donate some of the money you would have spent on expensive champagne or liquor to a local soup kitchen or hostel for the homeless.
Your local newspaper may print more ideas for those in need, please don't ignore their requests. Be generous.
Whether we celebrate a Pagan Yule, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or Chanukah, all across the world we must stop harboring resentment, hatred, anger, and mistrust. Religions must be about forgiveness, not violence and killing, and certainly not ethnic cleansing. Whichever holiday you are celebrating, be sure you are celebrating peace and love, laughter, hope, and contentment.
Health and happiness,
Julie Fisher-McGarry
