Speak Up Now For Abused Children

The holidays can be a sad lonely time for anyone without a family or with a dysfunctional family. For victims of child abuse the pain can be unimaginable. As this holiday season approaches, think about a six-year-old child who is homeless because his parents have spent all their money on drugs. Think about an eight-year-old girl who takes care of her two younger siblings because her mother is mentally unstable. Or a 10 year-old who is being sexually abused by her mother's boyfriend. Children in San Diego County continue to face a crisis in abuse, with over 8000 calls to the Child Abuse Hotline each month. No wonder Voices for Children always need child advocates. Currently we have over 400 volunteers but we really need 2000 Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Monitors (CASM) and Educational Surrogates to adequately serve all the children in foster care who need our help.

To stop this crisis and meet such an ambitious goal we desperately need your help as our waiting list continues to grow. Some of these children have been referred 4 and 5 times by judges, attorneys or social workers. Some children have been waiting over a year for an advocate to be assigned.

During our holiday gift drive, we always have children ask for skateboards or Pods. But it is not unusual to have a child ask for a CASA for Christmas. Our next information sessions are Wednesday, December 13 and January 3. If you have any questions or would like to attend, please do not hesitate to call Gary Cagle at 858-569-2096 x 227 or email at GaryC@voices4children.com. Thank you for your help in getting the community involved in assisting San Diego's abused children.

World AIDS Day is Dec 1

This year's theme, supported by the slogan “We are all accountable: STOP AIDS. Keep the Promise.”, has been chosen to reiterate the importance of promises made in meeting the targets set in the fight against HIV/AIDS. This focus, which will remain the key driver for the WAC until 2010, is not just specific to World AIDS Day but also reflects their work throughout the year.

The face of AIDS is increasingly young and female, and the statistics are startling. Nearly half of people living with HIV worldwide are women, and 76% of youth living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa are young women and girls.

AIDS is the worst epidemic humankind has ever faced. The virus infects 14,000 people every day, leaving millions of people suffering and having a devastating effect on the world's most vulnerable:

-More than 14 million children worldwide have been orphaned because of AIDS. That's the equivalent of every child under five in America with no one to watch over them.

- Nearly six million children have been killed by AIDS. That number is more than every child in every grade school and high school in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, Miami and Atlanta combined.

The World AIDS Campaign (WAC) executive director Marcel van Soest explained: “There needs to be continued recognition and support for the civil society organizations campaigning to develop their sense of joint identity and common purpose.”

The world promised to stop AIDS by 2015. What will you do? For more information go to ww.unaids.org or www.worldaidscampaign.info .

Human Rights Day - Dec 10

Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on the 10th of December. It commemorates the day in 1948 the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It's formal inception dates from 1950, after the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V) inviting all States and interested organizations to adopt 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is the main UN Rights official, and this office plays a major role in coordinating efforts for the yearly observation of Human Rights Day. This year the focus is: “Fighting Poverty: a matter of obligation, not charity. Poverty is a cause and product of human rights violations. It is this double edge that makes poverty probably the gravest human rights challenge in the world. The links between human rights and poverty should be obvious. People whose rights are denied--victims of discrimination or persecution, for example -- are more likely to be poor. Generally they find it harder or impossible to participate in the labor market and have little or no access to basic services and resources. Meanwhile the poor in many societies cannot enjoy their rights to education, health and housing simply because they cannot afford them. And poverty affects all human rights.

Quantum Edition of WHAT THE BLEEP!? Down the Rabbit Hole

The FINAL presentation of the WHAT THE BLEEP material is now available. William Arntz's most complete BLEEP offering features 15 hours of BLEEP material on three double-sided DVDs. The reason for the new extended release is because “Bleepers” want as much BLEEP material as they can get. Thirteen hours of this material has never been seen before. William Arntz developed much of this new material in response to criticism of the original films content as New Age fuzzy-science. The convergence of science and spirituality is of great ongoing fascination to both the scientific and spiritual communities.

There are literally millions of Bleep fans of the phenomenal ground breaking independent 2004 hit film What The BLEEP Do we Know!? across the country and around the world. Last year, the 2 1/2 hour Director's Cut version of the film What The BLEEP!? Down the Rabbit Hole had a limited theatrical run in U.S. theatres. However, most BLEEP fans never got to see the hours of additional interview footage used in that version by filmmaker Will Arntz.

Now, for BLEEP fans everywhere, Arntz has delivered the ultimate and final version of the experience. The QUANTUM EDITION of What the Bleep!? Down the Rabbit Hole. This new edition includes never-seen-before scientific interviews and animations sequences, and special features such as Q & A with the filmmakers, the Rabbit Hole version theatrical trailer, raw footage of the interviews, and a never-seen-before interview with Buddhist teacher Khempo Yurmed Tinly.

Arntz also developed a randomizer feature that lets the viewer see a new movie every time the film is watched. It's the first of its kind on a DVD movie! Arntz says, “With all that remarkable interview footage, and the amazing quantum connections between different issues, addressed in the film, I thought some sort of randomization of scenes and features could be pretty interesting. So I researched the programming of DVD players -- remember, I spent years writing high-level computer programs before moving into filmmaking and I discovered that it could be done! Not only that, but there was a way for the user to specify, by using their remote, How far down the Rabbit Hole they wanted to go.”

All in all, the new release DVD looks great and plays with as much panache as the original film. The Quantum Edition delves more deeply into the most important scientific topics and leaves us the viewer dazzled by the implications. This is certainly the collector's edition and makes a great gift for any BLEEP fan.
