While "visions of sugar plums dance in our heads...," Americans' addiction to "all things sweet" seems to gain momentum as the holidays roll on. Even though the federal government and other experts have warned against the persistent trend of dangerously high consumption of refined sugar, considered an element in contributing to a variety of diseases, the consumption of sugars and sweeteners in the U.S. is estimated at 157 pounds per person/per year, by the U.N.'s FAO report. Refined processed sugars (and artificial substitutes, mostly devoid of nutrients), tax the health of our people and the planet.
