Shades of Images
Shades of Images , Aliah Selah's second album, showcases a vocal beauty and a lyrical talent that bring to mind the haunting mystery of the old Jefferson Airplane. Some have said she evokes shades of Joni Mitchell, but that's not what I hear on this CD.“The concept for this CD came from my chorus teacher in high school,” she says, “who believed in me enough to give me some good advice: ‘Keep your poems in a shoebox, and one day they will be your songs.' The poem that became the title song of this album was in that shoebox.”
Sharon Jones wrote of this album in Austin Daze Magazine: “Each tune glides into the next in a cosmic flow of jazzy vocal lines, that can also rock with a psychedelic edge on cuts like “What Is So?” and “Dig Deep,” both modern stand-out tracks with major commercial appeal.
If you're one of those who got to hear Aliah live on Thursday evenings at Miracles Cafe in Cardiff, you've got to be missing her now that Miracles has faded away into local history. Get the CD. Rich with her marvelous blend of vibrant rock and soothing mystical ballads, it will help to heal some of the pain of letting go.
Aliah's multimedia production Creativity Lives! , currently in pre-production, features songs from this album (especially the atmospheric opening track “Little Shelf” and the final track “What is So?” with its timely message in tune with “What the Bleep….” Focusing on issues of artists' rights and the connection between creativity and healing, Creativity Lives! showcases her interdisciplinary artistic abilities (singing, songwriting, poetry, dance, artwork and comedy) and the creativity of other artists and their stories of their creative process. Bring it on!
