National BioDiesel Conference and Expo in San Diego Feb. 5-8
The San Diego Convention Center will host this year's National BioDiesel Conference and Expo from Feb. 5-8. The conference promises a rich educational program that includes general sessions with some of the best-known experts in the field. More than 40 sessions will cover everything from fuel quality standards, federal and state legislation updates and European marketing strategies, to trends in BioHeat and opportunities in agricultural uses of biodiesel.
The exhibits will give attendees the opportunnity to learn about the latest products, services and advances in the field. A number of networking and social events are also scheduled including the very popular Super Bowl Party, Golf Tournament and Welcome Reception. For those who are able to arrive early, there are several pre-conference training sessions beginning on Saturday, February 4th.
This year's expo is sure to attract a record number of biodiesel marketers, consumers, feedstock growers, fuel distributors, government leaders and biodiesel users. As a individual you can join the Biodiesel Backers, or your business or organization can join the Biodiesel Alliance.
Biodiesel is the fastest growing alternative to petroleum based fuels. It is made from vegetable oils and waste animal fats, reducing our dependence on foreign oil. Biodiesel emissions are dramatically lower than those of petroleum diesel, reducing toxic airborne pollutnats. It is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades rapidly if released to the environment.
For more information call 800/841-5849 or visit www.biodieselconference.org for a full schedule and details. |

The Real Dirt on Farmer John Special Film Screening Feb. 10
Filmmaker Taggart Siegel's new movie, The Real Dirt on Farmer John, is coming to San Diego, February 10. The screenings will be at two San Diego locations: Flower Hill in Del Mar and Mission Valley. Farmer John himself will be there to discuss the movie and answer any questions. Check the website for further details.
Some movies are so full of heart and soul, are so much a reflection of their times, they feel like they were destined to be made and to make a mark, not only in the world of cinema, but in the American social fabric as well. The Real Dirt on Farmer John is such a movie. At this time, many of us are yearning for a more truly compassionate and caring nation, for a more inclusive and understanding society, for a return to deeper, more spiritual values and a sense of personal (rather than corporate) empowerment. Now along comes the maverick, all-american John Peterson, a real third-generation Illinois farmer, and his true story of soil-based soul, devastation during the farm debt crisis of the 1980s and resurrection in the 90s as a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm now serving 1200 families in the Chicago area.
Filmmaker Taggart Siegel has effectively woven together Peterson's home movies from the 1950s with footage from the 70s when the farm was a hippie art commune, the 80s when Peterson lost almost everything, from Mexico where he sought solace and healing from his failure, the 90s when Peterson experienced his resurrection and recent years, as the farm now brims with organic produce, student farmers, families and children. The film reflects the struggles of American family farmers over the last fifty years and, more importantly, the universal “hero's journey” through life, death and rebirth. The scenes of Peterson with his mother overflow with love and epitomize the deep caring that is the film's essence.
And at a time when we are bombarded with darkly cynical fare, The Real Dirt on Farmer John has a fresh, lively flavor that will satisfy our hunger for goodness and meaning like a fine meal. Visit www.therealdirt.net for more information.

More Time, More Fun, Focus of Site
On their informative website, The Center for a New American Dream helps Americans consume responsibly to protect the environment, enhance quality of life and promote social justice. They work with individuals, institutions, communities and businesses to conserve natural resources, counter the commercialization of our culture and change the way goods are produced and consumed.
Their message isn't about deprivation. It's about getting more of what really matters—more time, more nature, more fairness and more fun. Their resources target 3 main areas: Living Consciously, Buying Wisely and Making a Difference. Living consciously means getting more of what really matters in life, being aware of what's going on around you, finding balance and having a little fun while you're at it. Buying wisely means becoming a positive force in the marketplace, using your purchasing power to support business practices that are safer for the environment and better for people. Making a difference is all about making sure your citizen voices are heard, being active in your community and letting policymakers know where you stand.
