Join “Not One Damn Dime Day” on Anti-inauguration Day Jan. 20th

Here's a creative idea ciruculating the internet. Original source unknown. Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq, since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose it, Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20, 2005, is now “Not One Damn Dime Day” in America.

Those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending. During “Not One Damn Dime Day” please don't spend money. Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases. Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.

For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down. The object is simple: Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and to stop it.

There is no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda to rant about. On “Not One Damn Dime Day” you take action by doing nothing. You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed. For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime.

Closing the Recycling Circle

With our landfills overflowing from the excess of our high consumer lifestyles, several on-line organizations are making a dent in how we dispose of unwanted items. Based on the theory, “One person's trash is another person's treasure,” Freecycle.com was launched. From the Freecycle website you are linked to your local e-group where, as a free member, you have basically three options. You can post e-mails to offer, ask for, and take items. This reporter has “Freecycled” furniture and other household items and taken clothes, electronics and furniture. All in pretty good condition and, best of all, Free!

BookCrossing.com was created to make the world a public library. At their website you join, again for free, and receive e-mail notices about books “released into the wild” by other members. The books are registered on the site then set free by being left in a public place that is noted on the site. You can then go physically to the location in your neighborhood and pick up the book, read it, journal your review and re-release it. This reporter, just today “captured” her first wild book! A beautiful, hardcover that I've wanted to read for years. And afterwards will do my part to close the circle.
