Foodbites: Servings of food news, events & recipe

Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals , recently made a succinct distinction; consumers shop with a primary focus on value (price) and citizens make their buying decisions based on values (for the planet and its people).

Carlo Petrini, founder of the Slow Foods movement and of the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Italy , noted that the wisdom, profundity and cultural meaning of “food” has been lost in the industrial food production ethos prevalent in the modern world. He reminds us that: gastronomy is an interdisciplinary science, with its historical, anthropological, agricultural, economic , social and philosophical aspects; asks us to open our minds to the complexity of foods systems and think again about our approach to our daily bread; and to give food back to its central role in our lives. This also means returning to a respect for the earth, the source of all sustenance. It means return to a sense of community. For more, visit www.slowfoodsandiego.org, or www.slowfood.com.

Please enjoy discovering some of the events and opportunities offered by our own food convivium; growers, chefs, educators and more. A Sustainability Conference, healthful eating program, local school garden, and SD Restaurant Week (Jan. 7-12) with a featured recipe are on the plate in this month's column. If we are what we eat, maybe with the beginning of the New Year you might consider getting involved in some part of the journey, from seed to enjoying what's on our table, and join in with those who are working to build a vibrant and healthful community for all. So let's savor the flavors as we make conscious choices and act mindfully in our daily actions to help sustain ourselves and the future of our planet!

Money & You
Sufficiency is Heavenly

Recently, I read Lynne Twist's book, The Soul of Money. She had kindly sent me the book about a year ago – and I put it in my stack of books to read, thinking that I would read it along with so many other wonderful publications that are sent to me as the head of the Excellerated Business Schools/Money & You Program.

Spirituality and Healing

On Friday evening, Jan. 19, Larry Dossey, MD will be the Scripps Trailblazer Award Recipient and Keynote Speaker at 7pm. He will speak on Spirituality and Healing. Dr. Dossey has become an internationally influential advocate of the role of the mind in health and the role of spirituality in health care. The author of ten books and numerous articles, the primary quality of all of Dr. Dossey's work is scientific legitimacy, with an insistent focus on “what the data shows.” Bringing the experience of a practicing internist and the soul of a poet to the discourse, Dr. Dossey offers a panoramic insight into the fundamental nature and the future of medicine.

The Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine is sponsoring it's 4th Annual conference, Natural Supplements: An Evidence-Based Update at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines from Jan. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 21. This CME program, presents a concise, clinically relevant overview of natural supplements in evidence-based practice, with an emphasis on disease states. See the News section for more. Individual tickets are available for Dr. Dossey's keynote address.

What follows combines a submission to us by Dr. Dossey and a personal interview with him in December. His gracious and warm manner made it very easy to talk with him.

Avoiding Food Poisoning
Keeping Food Safe; How does Organic Compare?

Our health, environment, economy and politics might seem to some people to be quite a potent mouthful to swallow for just eating your daily greens. However with the recent outbreaks of food poisonings and contamination with E. Coli, salmonella, etc. we're seeing more of the interrelatedness of these subjects discussed regarding the food safety issue. All of these sectors point to holes in our current food system but are part of the larger and far-reaching conversation about sustainability – practices and values, both globally and locally, as well as relationship to our land and community.

The Law of Attraction

Unless you have been living under a rock, or isolated in a remote cave on a desert island, you have most likely found yourself in a conversation about the latest topic du jour: the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction looks like this:

Thoughts = Attraction

The truth of the matter is that the Law of Attraction is nothing new. It has been around as long as human consciousness. But thanks to the latest DVD, The Secret, this ancient idea is making a modern, popular resurgence.
