Holding Your Ground

Can you hold your ground when you need to? When it comes to defending ourselves, unfortunately, many of us are pushovers. Resisting others' requests or demands, even when they're unreasonable or excessive, raises a fear of being rejected, ridiculed. So we give in, give up, and with a sigh, sell ourselves out. “Next time,” we think, “I'll put my foot down.” The problem is that there's never a right time, never a time when it's comfortable to say “no” and honor ourselves.

Here's the tip. First, see if you have support from friends or family for standing up for yourself. This IS a big step. You'll need back up. Second, evaluate carefully whether continuing to endure mistreatment will cause more pain than what you might lose. Prepare for the worst. When our nation's founding fathers held their ground against Britain , they were ready to sacrifice their lives, their fortunes, their sacred honor. They believed in what they were doing. Check out if you believe in yourself. Write your own declaration of independence.

Finally, place your awareness in your spine. Feel how it supports you. Remember, you do have a backbone. When holding your ground matters more than your comfort, you too will be ready to opt for a new state of union . . . you and your integrity. ©
