A World Beyond Violence
2008 CA Dept. of Peace Conference

What do road rage, school bullying, spouse battering, suicide, prison riots, child abuse, campus shootings, murder, gang banging, hate crimes and war have in common? They are all learned violent behaviors people choose when we believe we have no other options. This conference focuses on exciting options for nonviolent solutions and what every person can do to help transform our culture into “a world beyond violence”.

People from all over California and the western States will convene at the oldest campus in California at Berkeley on August 1-3 to attend the 2008 California Department of Peace Conference. Conference segments and speakers will relate directly to the nationwide movement to pass House Resolution 808 (H.R. 808) now in Congress, to establish a cabinet level U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence (DOP).

Green Patriotism, Children’s Cancer, and National Security

On May 29, 2008 the Attorney General of California filed a major lawsuit against several body care and household-cleaning product companies whose products recently tested highest for the carcinogenic contaminant 1,4-dioxane. The lawsuit was filed under provisions of the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986.

The suit was the culmination of a two year investigation I undertook into the shoddy manufacturing practices of companies using branded cartoon characters to cause children to buy their bubble bath and shampoo products—all of which contained a cancer causing chemical that, in many cases, had been knowingly kept in the formula by the manufacturer or distributors.

FOODBITES
Slow Food Nation ’08 Preview, Archi’s Acres, Recipies & News to Use

July 4th celebrates our nation's Independence Day, but with increasing fuel prices, concerns of looming worldwide food shortages, contamination and safety issues, and the mounting effects of global warming, the term In terdependence seems to ring more true to our current situation. According to an FDA report, the U.S. now gets our food from 150 countries through 300 ports-of-entry, with imported foods accounting for 15% of all foods by volume, 60% of fresh fruits and vegetables, and 75% of seafood.

“Americans have outsourced their food production to a few large corporations - and the results are dramatic. The freedom of owning your means of food production means the freedom to choose healthy food, healthy soil and a sustainable future,” said Anya Fernald, Executive Director of Slow Food Nation.

A contemporary journey, a timeless destiny—and three guys with a camera

One. Is it “the loneliest number”, like the song says, or is it the goal of all spiritual endeavor – to be “one with everything?” Does “one” mean you stand alone, free and independent, autonomous, an individual – or does it mean that you're connected in oneness with everyone and everything, all that is, here and in the entire universe? Could it mean both? Those are the kind of questions that can dance through your head sometimes when you first wake up in the morning. Ward M. Powers, a middle-aged guy from Michigan, suddenly woke up with a strange idea in his head on April 13, 2002, at 6:45 AM.

Finding Our Way Home:
Heartwarming Stories That Ignite Our Spiritual Core
.

Today many of us are caught up in the same fearful belief system, which tells us that we live in an unsafe world, there are enemies out there who need punishment, and our path in life is to put ourselves and our families first. Consequently, we worry abo ut the future and try to get as much as we can and hold on to it, all the while believing that there is something external to us that will eventually bring us safety and everlasting happiness.

It's a belief system . . .

• . . . that doesn't regard others as our equals.

• . . . that thinks it's too bad so many people are starving or are in poverty, but there's nothing we can really do about it.

Assembly Bill 2112
Saldaña Bill Would Require Zero Net-Energy Homes

San Diego 's own Lori Saldaña has come up with a far-sighted albeit controversial bill to make all new residential construction in California “zero net-energy” by the year 2020. The Democratic Assemblywoman, also the chair of the Assembly's Housing Commission, is a leading voice locally and statewide for the environment generally and for renewable energy specifically. Her proposal is Assembly Bill 2112, a measure that puts teeth into a major item of the Energy Action Plan, the set of recommendations by the California Public Utilities Commission and the California Energy Commission that would implement the state's stated goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020. (See 2006's Global Warming Act AKA: AB 32.)

The Ghost Whisperer
A Conversation with James Van Praagh

James Van Praag is one of the most successful mediums in the world, across a range of media. (How often do we get to pluralize the same word in two ways in the same sentence!) Not only is he a best-selling author, but his work communicating and healing across the dimensions has been the basis for a range of films and television programs, including the current ‘Ghost Whisperer.' (He shares this month's cover with series star Jennifer Love Hewitt.) Light Connection Interviewer David S. Cohen spoke to him recently about his new book, ‘Ghosts Among Us.'
