Written in a tender, though undoubtedly masculine style, The Magic Formula strips off the emotional veneer to expose emotions, fears and uncertainties experienced by this group of men (“every-man”) who have reunited to “compare” their lives. This time is different, though, in that a “teacher” has moved among them, one who encourages them to express and explore their most personal problems and disappointments and how to deal with that “view in the mirror.”
