PBS Documentary Features New Medicine March 29
special includes focus on breakthrough work at La Jolla’s Scripps Institute

Is there more to successful medical treatment than simply the latest drugs and medical procedures? Is single-minded attention to disease symptoms a narrow approach to helping a patient heal? Have highly-specialized physicians and the structure of healthcare insurance reimbursement distorted the practice of medicine? If you answered “yes,” guess what? You're right. And now medical scientists agree.

Serving Sustainability

I'd like to briefly share some “Food for Thought” inspired by participating in the recent Biodiesel conference in San Diego, before the rest of this month's column, which includes a “real” cookbook, recipe, food news, resources, classes and events.

Coming to the conference with my interest in organics and holistic living seemed to give me lenses that clearly saw a message of interconnectedness, of sustainability, food and fuel, the influence our conscious choices make, and biodiesel's relation to social, economic and environmental issues.

Biodiesel Shows Promise for the Future-Right Away

The premier event in biodiesel education, the 2006 National Biodiesel Conference & Expo, came to the San Diego Convention Center Feb. 5-8. This year's conference drew a record crowd of 2000 visitors from around the world. It was hosted by the National Biodiesel Board (NBB), a nonprofit trade association that coordinates the industry and educates the public about biodiesel.

Biodiesel has become America's fastest growing alternative fuel according to the Department of Energy (DOE), with 2005 production tripling to 75 million gallons.

More than 600 filling stations make biodiesel available to the public. More than 600 fleets use biodiesel, including government and military, commercial and school bus fleets. San Diego area users of the cleaner burning fuel include Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.

The conference brought people from industry offering products or their own experience of using biodiesel, spokesmen from the government and interested consumers. One minute you'd hear a US Marine talk about how bases were using biodiesel. The next, you'd be with the head of the Berkeley Food Coop. There were many diverse people and organizations, but all had a common dream: expanding the use of biodiesel and lessening our dependence on fossil fuels.

Among those who were given the “Eye on Biodiesel” Award was Jim Evanoff, the Environmental Manager for Yellowstone National Park. He began using biodiesel in one of the park's vehicles (which he still drives) more than a decade ago , and now Yellowstone's entire diesel fleet operates on biodiesel.

Matrix Energetics
Moving beyond healing to personal transformation

Steve: You don't like calling your work a system.

Dr. Bartlett: Well, you could look at it as a system, but if you do that, what you have is just another technique. It's a really good technique; but is it really an expression of what's possible within the framework of the way it's intended? The way it's intended is that you apply it to any aspect of your life and you get very creative with it. So as you go along through life, you literally make up your outcomes and you get so good at practicing your outcomes you start to see them physically manifest. That's when you have that clarification that you are actually doing what you think you are doing.

Inspiration: Your Ultimate Calling
How Life Looks When I Am Inspired

I'd like to acknowledge right from the outset that I don't live at this level of being in-Spirit 100 percent of the time like most everyone else, I occasionally have lapses and feel uninspired. Yet these moments have become rarer and rarer; in fact, it's difficult for me to recall a day in the past several years when I felt completely uninspired.

What follows is a personal account of both how I feel inside and what seems to take place in the world around me when I feel connected to Spirit in the ways that I've written about.

Update on the Perricone Weight-Loss Program

No, I haven't lost 20 pounds and 6 dress sizes. And I don't care what anyone says. It's not easy, simple or fast. This program has been very hard and would probably have faded into oblivion if I hadn't had to write follow-up articles.

I've been required to change some very ingrained habits. Then, of course, there's that pesky old bingeing problem, already not as bad as it used to be but still remaining an obstacle to having the results I want.
