Why Money is Bad, Why Money is Good
By Siva Baba
Believe it or not, most people deep down in their hearts think that money is bad. It is something ingrained in the blood of the human race. One day a rich doctor told one of my students that he hated me. This is what he said to my student, “I hate myself for loving money.” I expect a Guru to hate money, I can't understand how a Guru can love money.” I understand the doctor's position; I have heard this criticism a million times. |

The truth is—I neither love money nor hate money. Assuming either position is dangerous. If you love money, it is true you will be lured by it. You then will want more and more of it so that you can have more toys like fancy cars, fancy shoes, fancy clothes, fancy homes, etc. It is certainly not wrong to long for luxury, but the danger is that you will be supporting and nurturing your material consciousness at the expense of your spiritual consciousness.
From morning to evening, you will only think about money and hang out with people with money, or people who are in the business of making money. God and Meditation will be very marginal in the life of a rich man. Over a period of time, the love for money turns into greed. The rich man wants to have multiple businesses and keeps working around the clock to expand his empire. He partners with politicians both legally and illegally to execute legislation to promote his business. The politicians indeed do need the businessman for his personal finances and for campaign finance. Now you can clearly see money leading to evil.
The question is: “Are you going to stay away from money because it is evil?” Of course you are not. Without money you can't live life, how can you buy your food and clothes? How will you pay your rent? I jokingly tell people: “Life is miserable, no matter what. It is better to be miserable with money than without it.”
So far I have talked about the negative aspects of money, it is only just a half-truth—there are a lot of good things that money can do. I'm really happy that Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are giving away their money for charity. Lots of their money has gone into humanitarian activities in Africa and other countries. So money is not evil. Only lack of it or misuse of it is evil. Compare the United States with Mexico—where would you want to live? You see a lot of Mexicans crossing the border, most often risking their lives to get into the US. Why? They need a better life. Better food, better clothing and better living conditions.
Finally, I want to throw some light on the problem of why people innately hate money. To answer this question, we have to go back to the very origin of the human race. All creation myths of the old world talk about the fall of human beings from heaven. At the beginning of time, we were all spirits. We had infinite freedom to do everything; there was no disease, old age, pain or suffering of any kind. All the problems started with man gaining materiality. Matter, then, is the culprit.
Our body symbolizes matter. If you look closely into the nature of life, you realize that you sweat to keep the body happy. Why do you toil? You work hard, you toil in order to make money. Why do you need money? You need money to buy food for the body, clothes for the body, shoes for the body, bed for your body, etc. Your unconscious mind remembers the golden age of the beginning of creation. It compares the life “in spirit” with the life “in matter”—no wonder that it hates matter and money. The subconscious remembers that money is Matter—that's why it hates money.
I must tell you we are approaching the end of times. The end of times is not simply destruction. The end will put us in the beginning. Life is cyclical—we are going to end where we started. We started out as pure spirit. We are going to get that primordial purity of the spirit. Flesh and blood existence is coming to an end.
