Approval-Seeking Hindering Self-Expression?
Is approval-seeking hindering your full self-expression? Whether you’re yearning to express yourself artistically, professionally, financially or relationally, looking for others’ approval often stops the creative process in its tracks. Even worse, fear of disapproval may prevent you from conveying your unique vision at all. Finding security within your self is the first challenge – altering attitude the second.
Here’s the tip. First, check if self-expression is important enough to risk changing outlook and behavior. vIf yes, take a long, deep look at your potential offering to see how it belongs to you — what chord it strikes inside — what you appreciate and admire. Breathe. Slow down to enjoy yourself and your inspiration.
Next, stand tall, plant your feet on the earth (floor will do) and say out loud, I approve this_____________ (book, painting, project, workshop, video, message, etc.) Say it again. Then affirm your own approval in a written sentence and post in a prominent place in office, home or car. Take time to notice how good it feels in your heart to own your knowing.
Finally, when you are filled with your own esteem, it’s time to modify your motivation. Shift your perspective from gaining approval to giving your gifts.Focus on what you’re longing to share with the world.Be open to others’ gifts to you. Participation is so much easier when sharing is the goal. Now, go out and play!
