Are You Prepared for Disaster?

Are you prepared for disaster? When catastrophe strikes far away and the media bring us images of death and destruction we are flooded with feelings: helplessness, compassion, and an urge to do something, anything. If the catastrophe was predictable and/or compounded by human error and incompetence, we may feel compelled to call for large-scale inquiry to improve response systems. At a more subtle level, a distant disaster gives us a unique opportunity to look at our own preparedness.

 


Here's the tip. First, take action on the current calamity. Volunteer aid, get politically involved. Next, consider that this disaster actually is a mirror for you. What signals are you ignoring in your own life? Are you gambling with your finances, nutrition, health or relationships? Perhaps you're playing with fire with an increasing dependence on drugs or alcohol. Check whether your own emergency plan and survival stockpile are up to snuff. The angrier you stay about authorities not heeding warnings or taking appropriate precautionary action, the more likely it is that this reflects similar denial in your situation. Finally, see if you are ready receive the gift of this personal wake-up call to take charge right now to avoid preventable disaster, to be prepared and just possibly to save your own life. ©
