VIBRANT AGING
Forever Ageless —
For Men & Women
An Interview with Caroline Sutherland by Joanie Blaxter
Medical intuitive and author of The Body Knows , Caroline Sutherland has gathered an impressive lineup of presenters for the upcoming conference: Forever Ageless for Men and Women - Medical Intuition, Bio-identical Hormone Balancing, and Memory Function. Clearly reflected is Caroline's emphasis on the interconnectedness of the metaphysical with the physical. Starting with a special guest appearance by Louise Hay , the list includes two experts on the use of bio-identical hormones (made from natural sources, not synthetic, and with the chemical structure identical to human hormones) : Roberta Brinton Ph.D. and neuroscientist and Larry Frieders , M.A., R.Ph; also, Eve Rinehart , author of The Energy Exchange and Pat Frieders R.Ph., MSW, Facilitator of the Emotional Freedom Technique; Joe Filbeck, M.D., director of the Palm La Jolla Medical Spa in San Diego and avid proponent of anti-aging medicine; and Les Brietman, M.D. who will address insulin potentiation therapy (low-dose chemotherapy) without side effects. |

As part of her presentation, Caroline herself will provide an individual health reading for each participant and confidential in-depth explanation of the assessment with the issues of inflammation, weight gain, fatigue, pain, hormone issues, memory loss, aging skin, stamina and vitality all to be addressed. Caroline Sutherland's career as a medical intuitive had its inception over 20 years ago she received testing for food and environmental allergies, and consequently dramatically altered her diet and improved her health. She then went on to become an allergy testing technician. After testing about 50 people a day, she started to see beyond the normal levels of perception and receive spiritual guidance about what to do additionally for each patient. The doctor would often incorporate her suggestions, at which point she began to get consistent, concrete validation that her accuracy level was extremely high.“Vibrant Aging” is what she likes to call her focus. And based on the dynamism and energy she expressed during our telephone interview, I would say that at age 63, Caroline Sutherland must be doing something right.
Joanie: Where would you like to start, what would you like the readers to know?
Caroline: What interests me most is that we are given one physical body for a finite number of years. So it is our duty to shepherd that body wisely and in a healthy manner throughout our lives, specifically so we can fulfill our destiny and mission. Our mission is something that is an act of service ormakes the world a better place. It involves energy, vitality and strength in order to complete our mission and if we have an unhealthy physical body we don't have the wherewithal and stamina to be able to feel optimistic about our future or to execute what our soul or inner being wants us to do.
Absolutely! The vehicle is the key, isn't it? It's our very first manifestation, our very first creation.
Yes! And what I find over and over again is that I will look out into a sea of faces in an audience and I see these very, very wise, highly evolved spiritual beings whose physical bodies do not match the evolution of their soul. It makes me weep! I can pretty much stay immune to what's going on with people's lives because I realize that's their decision, that's what they've chosen, but there is a great sadness because I can see many, many people who will not fulfill their destiny because they don't have the physical health to do so.
What prevents people from fulfilling their destiny and how that is tied into the conference.
I would say that what gets in the way of people fulfilling their destiny is the seduction of addictions. The addictions keep a person derailed from where they're supposed to be going because addictions block inner guidance or spiritual connection. So an addiction can be anything that has power over us. It can be substance addiction, be it a recreational drug, alcohol, or cigarette smoking. It could be to a food. Addictions to coffee, chocolate, sugar - those are very common addictions and they placate the inner child. They help to nullify the effect of daily life, disappointment, sadness and stress, so those are pacifiers. People use those to build fences. And of course there are addictions to work or worry, addictions to being on overload and not relaxing, and addictions to people. Many people are under the thumb or under the effect of others. They give their power away, they defer to others, a significant other sometimes, or they're addicted to pleasing. There are many emotional addictions. And then there are addictions to possessions, material wealth, and to places and people.
I've heard people say “Well I couldn't possibly move away from my beach home.” And the beach home is making them sick because of for example, exposure to mold or dampness. So, I think the whole idea is that we should be free. We should be free to be moved by the universe, wherever the universe wants us to go. And that's not saying we have to leave everything behind, but there's a careful balance, a delicate balance, of listening within and accessing that inner guidance that is very readily available to us when we're healthy. When we're healthy and we're clear and we're detoxified, our inner guidance is so readily accessible. It becomes our key ally in the whole progression of our life.
How did you move towards incorporating the concept of bio-identical hormones as part of an anti-aging program into your work as a medical intuitive?
Well, I started out this work very, very innocently. I went to a medical doctor who specialized in environmental medicine when I was 39 years of age because I had the early warning signs of Multiple Sclerosis… And remember I'm a medical doctor's daughter. My father was a doctor and so was my grandfather, and my mother was a dietician. I was well versed in traditional western medicine from the get-go as a young child. So I crossed these portals into alternative or complementary medicine. I personally noticed so many benefits: in energy, stamina, mental clarity, weight loss. I became completely pain-free from the beginnings of arthritis. [I developed] shiny, thick hair and strong nails and therefore, strong bones, better digestion, clearer and better eyesight—so many benefits come from changing the whole nutritional and supplementation program. I became a healthy woman!
And the MS symptoms disappeared as well?
Absolutely! Within a month, within 4 weeks all my symptoms disappeared, from numbness and tingling in the extremities and balance problems to depression, everything just evaporated. And I became absolutely struck and enchanted by the whole notion that... the body knows what to do to get well if we hand it the tools, and it seemed to me in my clinical experience that the tools were very simple. It wasn't something you needed to go across the pond and around the world find an answer for. The answers literally were at the end of a fork. That was the most revealing part. It had so much to do with diet. Nutrition and supplementation are of course important, but that will not have the benefit, it will not work unless the diet is changed. So now I'm 63, and my own personal health has taken various revolutions. The first, most important piece that came to me at age 39 is how my food allergies, my food intolerances were affecting me personally. Why they were making me tired, why they gave me arthritis and headaches, all those sorts of things. So understanding food allergies was the first major rung on a ladder of health, if you will.
Rung #2 was when I became menopausal in my mid-50's, when I understood that is a relationship between eating carbohydrates and poor fat burning metabolism, and that was related to hormones. So that second rung was reducing carbohydrates. What that did was to help me keep my weight at a stable level, which is normally about a size 6. So reducing carbs was another big piece that came in that was not important prior to menopause.
The 3 rd component happened when I was 58 years old and that was investigating bio-identical hormone balancing. I got that information from my own personal family physician and I certainly weighed and measured all of the pros and all of the cons. I decided to personally use bio-identical hormones when I turned 60 and now I've been using them for 3 years with a great deal of success.
The 4 th revolution, or rung on the ladder, was to reduce the amount of food that I ate. I knew from studies that that was important, but there was a pivotal moment in which that was brought home to me. It started with a trip that my husband and I took to Tibet. And because of the altitude and the odd food, I just didn't eat very much. And of course it was all very nutritionally sound with the right mix of proteins and carbohydrates and vegetables and lots of water and all those sorts of things. But it just was not in any way resembling overeating. So that I think is a very important piece of the Vibrant Aging component. And that is, to not overeat. So that was reducing the amount of food, not so much calories, because I still will eat fat, butter, coconut and olive oils, and avocado, with no restriction on them. But it's choosing healthy fats and not overeating. The part that has always interested me is how we're all connected to the universe. The universe or the flow of life or the divine flow, spirit, god, whatever you want to call it, we're constantly co-creating with that particular force. Whenever I've needed anything it has always come to me. I think if people could realize that, at any stage of life—particularly in our young years so we could get used to knowing that we're never alone, we're always guided, we're always given everything—if we understand that concept, then as we progress in years and we do start to have body breakdown or health issues, then we can just know that the next practitioner's name is just going to be given to us, or a lecture will'be given to us, information will be presented to us, to go forth and then embrace this next particular challenge in our health journey. So I've been very lucky that way and it's been a very important part of my life in terms of building a repertoire of'information and contacts that I can then disseminate and spread out to others.
What do you eat over the course of a day, and of course, I know that's tailored just to you and your body?
I will notice the biggest effect if I don't eat the right foods. And so I'm aware of my food intolerances and one of the foods I've been avoiding for 25 years is wheat and any wheat-based product. That will give me arthritis and will make me tired. I never bring anything home that I know would derail me. Like I don't have coffee, chocolate, anything that's wheat flour-based or even dairy products in my home. For some people, dairy products can be useful but I notice other people are affected by dairy products, most notably on a respiratory level, breathing, asthma, those sorts of things. And all dairy products will do for me is give me mucous and breathing problems. I'm very mindful of blood sugar balancing. I have excellent energy and stamina and clarity if I balance my blood sugar which means I do not eat excessive carbohydrates. I don't eat a lot of fruit, I eat a lot of vegetables, fruit only sporadically, maybe every second or third day. I think that's where most people get confused. They're doing their best to avoid sugar but they don't realize that fruit too is a sugar and can throw off blood sugar handling levels. The interesting thing about keeping blood sugar levels balanced and energy consistent is that the universe is always delivering subtle nuances, little messages, little nudges, little hints, pieces of intuition that can come to us on a moment to moment basis. And if we have fluctuating blood sugar levels, which means one moment we're tired, the next moment we feel balanced, another moment our brain seems to cut out and we're not clear, we can lose these subtle nuances. And so by balancing blood sugar levels, we become more in tune with life. We don't miss little clues that come from the universe. I find that blood sugar balancing is not just physical; it's very metaphysical. It's linked into our higher destiny and our purpose and into receiving impressions or intuitive guidance that can help to propel us forward into our own particular purpose in life.
I couldn't agree with you more and your laundry list of foods sounds just like mine. And I have to ask one question from a personal perspective which is that I have been saying basically the same things to my friends for years and the resistance is enormous.
Yes. Well that's because of addictions. You see, I look at these faces and say to myself “When are you going to get it? When are you going to get that your health, your mental clarity, your energy is all within your control?” We can control what we're eating, what supplements we're taking, we can control our thoughts. I've had people literally break down and cry when I say, you know I'd like you to stop taking sugar. Oh my gosh! But the interesting thing is, once people balance their blood sugar, they're not interested in sugars because they don't have the cravings. It's marvelous! It's very spiritual. It's a package that's entirely related in a spiritual circle. What they're doing and achieving will literally galvanize them and cleave them to spirit. So it's extremely exciting! And the rewards are plentiful. Will that mean that a person will never have a sweet dessert? Of course not. They will, maybe every ten days instead of ten times a day. They will have these things but they will not be under the vice grip of these things. These items which were formerly a great seduction will no longer be a temptation. So I think the cornerstone for anyone who wants to live well and be vibrant and full of zest and optimism, the core is going to be their diet. And that's the diet of their thoughts, the diet of their actions, the diet of their foods, the diet of anything they personally encounter from an environmental standpoint. So I crossed these portals into alternative or complementary medicine.. In 1983 a door was opened for me that led me into the world of medical intuition because not only was I a patient of this medical doctor, but I also went on to become an allergy testing technician in his clinic, and in so doing, developed the gift of medical intuition that's specific to the physical body. That's my bent, my interest is strictly on the physical. What can we do to re-balance or correct this body and make it stronger? Thereby, giving that person the stamina to complete their mission or destiny. Nutrition and supplementation are of course important, but that will not have the benefit, it will not work unless the diet is changed. So I noticed these benefits and I went on a major bandwagon. I completely changed my life. I started writing about what this doctor was doing, what environmental medicine is all about.
And then in 1999, Louise Hay discovered me which was a major pivotal turning point in my career. After having had a consultation and studying with me and taking some seminars with me, she approached me to write my first book How to Tune into Your Body and Improve Your Health . From there my career took off… And that is, to not overeat, to get the weight under control and get the insulin levels more balanced to take the person out of the hyper-insulin zone. Insulin, of course, is a major hormone and too many starches and sugars throw a person's hormonal level off from an insulin level. So those were the important components that have come in specifically at certain times of my life just when it was needed or required or “up” for me. Like I don't have coffee, chocolate, anything that's wheat flour-based or even dairy products in my home. And if I do encounter those things occasionally out in the world it's only because there's no'other choice. So I keep food allergies and intolerances out of my own personal diet including dairy products.that anyone would wantI do know that people's physical bodies need to change so that we're actually using the cells more efficiently. So our bodies are working more efficiently and so we're using our bodies in the way that they're meant to be used. I think over the years we've become very complacent about diet. We've drawn more on supplementation, we've neglected diet.
On the one hand I see people coming out of the local health food store with a grande latte in one hand and a bag of organic vegetables in the other. And it's a little like voting Republican and Democratic at the same time, one vote cancels out the other. It really requires a strong focus, a 90% focus on diet, nutrition, hormone balancing and health strategies and 10% of the time we can stray off into latte land. But I think most people are doing 70% strays and 30% strong focus on diet. But I think people develop a focus when their health starts to decline I find that it's the same for any particular dietary plan, they need to be individualized or tailored and that's why I think medical intuition or developing one's own intuition can be very, very successful. But yes, overall, as a person progresses in age, when carbohydrate metabolism does change, I do find that most do well by lowering carbohydrates. That would be starches and sugars. Get those well down and get most of the carbohydrates from vegetables and whole grains that are not considered to be food intolerances.
