Irish Coffee

I can't help it—I love a good Irish tune. And the way Cady Finlayson lays them out on her fiddle, I'm inspired to get up and shake a little leg!

Her claim to the traditional notwithstanding, Cady's fiddle comes across with a bit of an global flavor. How could she help it? Growing up in New York filled her blood with unmistakably American folk influences. And true to her generation, she's steeped in world percussion.

Cady heads up a five-piece band in New York City and performs with a variety of other groups as well. She is joined on this uplifting, soulful CD by several other talented musicians: John Redmond on button accordion, Elkin Brown on guitar, Danny McLaughlin on uilleann pipes, Jim Roberts on percussion, Tim Alworth on bodhran, Michael J. Nelson on keyboard, and Cynthia Wyatt on harp.

Zen Pause

Zen. Peace. Transcendence. Right? Well… yes, and no. You have to remember that it's David Thierry who created it—the same David Thierry who used to write ad jingles, jammed with Andean musicians when he lived in Peru, and has recorded everything from classical instrumentals to rock, chill and Indian music.

Zen Pause , Thierry's debut CD for Real Music, is a rich blend of the many aspects of his musical personality. On the one hand, he creates a hypnotic downtempo slide with a synthesizer backdrop, the kind of vehicle you'd expect to ride to vast expanses of inner depth—but juxtaposed, sometimes in the same song, along comes a fine upbeat piano or guitar melody and hip percussion that make you want to get up and—well, move . And it works! Calm with a zany lift. Refreshing.

Thierry has earned the right to do as he pleases. Trained at Berkeley College of Music, he has put a deft hand to many a musical drawing board and proven himself a master of both the heart and the blade. The ambient domain may be his real home, allowing the freedom of experimentation that keeps music fun for him.

And for us. If you like chill, electronica, piano… try Zen Pause on for size. It could be a perfect fit.
