The Shadow Effect

The Shadow Effect
A Journey from Your Darkest Thought to Your Greatest Dream

The shadow lurks in dark corners we fear to explore, ready to pounce when we're least prepared for it and ruin our lives. And that's what it will do, we're told, unless we make the decision to bring it out into the light—at which point we find it holds the key to the realization of our dearest dream.

In this documentary, Debbie Ford shares deeply about her own shadow—years of drug addiction—and how she realized she had to face her demons or be devoured by them. One after another, others share their own stories of recovery from the depths of darkness. The message: we all have a shadow; you are not alone; there is a safe path through the terror of facing up to the dark aspects of your personality.

There are two CDs in this set. They're identical, except that the second one is longer because it's interactive—at carefully selected points in the film, Debbie appears to coach us through processes designed to identify shadow aspects of our own lives and our unrecognized positive traits as well, and finally through a process of self-forgiveness. It is recommended that we watch the other CD first to get an understanding of the subject at hand before tackling the interactive experience.

Though my initial inclination was to flip through this one and write a quick review, I got hooked by Debbie's first question, which had to do with what I might dare hope to achieve by dealing with the shadow side of my life. Hmmmmm! Hot question, that one. Yes, I do have a dream! And yes, I gave myself the gift of going through the entire interactive process. But of course there's always more work to do. The video points you to the web site, where ongoing help is available.

I don't think of myself as a person with much of a shadow, but that's probably self-delusion. Part of the work, to be sure, lies in moving beyond thinking of who you know who could benefit from watching these videos to realizing that you're one of them .

Kudos to Debbie Ford and the team who made The Shadow Effect possible! If you find yourself wanting more out of life, I encourage you to give yourself this profound gift.
