Ironically as I was finishing the Green Kitchen topic for August's FoodBites, the California legislature failed to pass two important bills which would have banned two notoriously toxic chemicals: PFOA, the synthetic chemical perfluorooctanoic acid, and BPA, or bisphenol A. PFOA, a carcinogenic ingredient of Teflon, also in food wrappers and packaging, is acknowledged by The Society of the Plastics Industry, a major trade group, as being found in the blood of 95 percent of the U.S. population "and is persistent in the environment, even in remote locations" BPA is a hormone disruptor, commonly found in baby bottles, sippy cups and formula packages, which laboratory studies show the chemical harms brain development and has been linked to certain types of cancers.
